Feeding the horses this morning, I noticed the was a ticking noise from the electric fencing cable between the two stalls. This is a precaution to stop the horses from making too much trouble over the dividing wall.
But ticking is not normal – it was discharging somewhere. The end of the cable is just tied to a piece of nylon twine which in turn is tied around a plastic sack (to prevent rubbing manes on the brick pillar). The sack is also secured higher up in the same way, albeit not connected to the electric fencing. And fixed to this piece of twine is a small metal hook, attached to a length of cotton twine with on the other end the salt lick.
When I touched the cotton twine, I got a shock! This can only mean that the salt was also “live” which means poor Laika will have had an unpleasant surprise in the past couple of days…
I have fixed it now – the electric cable now ends at a piece of rubber tubing around the twine. But how long before she dares to take a lick again… …who knows.
